Your graphics are your shield.

Aliens are over the coast and you are the only pilot cleared for takeoff. Fly right and shoot everything that glows. Every alien wave you clear drops an orb that lifts your jet, your music and the whole world one era sharper, from 8-bit to 16-bit to HD to painted ULTRA; every hit knocks you back one, and a hit in 8-bit ejects you. Bank into the far lane to escape a crowded sky, spend an era on a graphics crash to wipe the screen, power up the Vulcan, Laser or Missile, and take down the Harvester at the end of every stage.
